- The E.P.A. stated
that remanufactured products are "as good as new" in the May
1997 edition of its publication "Waste Wi$e Update".
- Remanufactured cartridged DO
NOT affect printer warranties! It is a violation of
Federal Law 93-637 January 4, 1975 Section 102 Part C, to void a
warranty for using a properly remanufactured toner cartridge!
- Companies such as FORD
and UNION CARBIDE have enjoyed substantial savings in cartridge
costs and disposal expenses since switching to the use of
remanufactured toner cartridges. (same edition as above).
- The use of remanufactured
toner cartridges helps satisfy legislative mandates: every
state, more than 250 municipal or regional entities and hosts of
private industries have policies mandating or favoring the purchase of
remanufactured products.
- The industrial-grade
plastic used in a typical cartridge takes at least 1,000 years to
decompose (paper takes two weeks) and cannot be recycled
efficiently. Remanufacturers, in reducing waste and conserving
materials, help divert almost 4,000 tons of engineering-grade
polymers yearly from our rapidly diminishing landfill capacity.
- Companies that confer
environmental benefits, on the average, enjoy a five-percent higher
stock value. These purchasers of remanufactured products foster
goodwill among employees, customers and the community. It speaks
volumes about their corporate cultures and business philosophies.
EDITORIAL:
What they don't want you to
know....
Hewlett Packard
employs several licensees (i.e. Canon) to manufacture its Laser Toner
cartridges. As the exterior of HP's packaging indicates, (sometimes
it's on an enclosure, it's always in small print!) their (sold as new)
cartridges "may include parts recovered from (their) recycling
program." In other words, all of HP's cartridge
manufacturing licensees are, to some extent, remanufacturers.
This product is then
marketed at a suggested retail price that approximately quadruples
HP's average cost of production. Laser toner cartridges are the
highest profit-margin item on HP's financial statements, by far
dwarfing the figures generated by their enormous Computer and peripheral
component division.
It is because of the
excessive profits generated by this single line item that HP and other OEM
Cartridge manufacturers turn a deaf ear to the complaints of environmental
activists. Consequently, legitimate cartridge remanufacturers,
despite their contributions to a healthier ecology, are maligned by the
OEM's because of the real threat to their bottom-lines.
Public perception is
now changing. There is a growing awareness that disposal of
cartridges and the use of OEM-only product entail demonstrable egregious
costs to both industry and ecology. This process is being hastened
by public awareness programs, spearheaded by such regulatory bodies as the
Environmental Protection Agency.
This organization
now recognizes, and is publicizing, the equivalence of a reliable
remanufactured cartridge to the OEM in matters relating to longevity and
quality of print. The E.P.A., by way of emphasizing the significance
of its findings, now recommends the use of remanufactured Laser Toner
cartridges to ALL of our U.S. Government agencies.
With Government
purchasing agents leading the way, remanufactured products are gaining
credibility and market share. After all, if "remanufactured is
just as good as new," then why not buy remanufactured?
